studio one groups is the latest soul jazz / studio one records release featuring legendary groups from the foundation label of reggae. bob marley and the wailers, toots and the maytals, the heptones – just three of reggaes greatest groups who all started at clement dodds studio one records, the university of reggae. studio one groups brings together classic artists alongside lesser-known artists and covers studio ones musical output from the 1960s and 70s featuring ska, roots, rocksteady, dub and more.

paper recording are back on vinyl with a fantastic debut 12- from italian duo soundersons, who have come up through the underground bologna house scene. can t get enough is a deep electro-funk slice of nu disco with diana g on vocals. it s got 80s synths and squelches, vocal hooks a plenty, clonking percussion, rhodes and that metro area / tom tom club vibe. parts i and ii are split in to vocal and instrumental over one side on continuous play for maximum dance floor action. on the flip, the mighty dj spinna brings his a game with a deep nyc take that is underground house at it s best. he uses synths, arps and the vocal to slowly build the remix that hits it s peak at the end. finally education finished things off with a raw disco cut up that hits the floor running and keeps going full pelt. one for the dancers.

next up on hell yeah is -the most balearic record i have ever released- according to label boss & it comes from japan s disco don max essa which features a four part track, themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely, on one side of vinyl, and two more on the flip. essa was born matthew bruce and the uk artist has now been releasing his blissed out beats on labels like feel music, electric minds, bear funk and is it balearic? recording for a decade. a prolific producer whose big hits like panorama suite/uptown vibration (is it balearic?) from 2010 have long been in the hell yeah boss s record bag, essa first approached the label with a bunch of tracks. a good correspondence alchemy ensued and together the artist and label decided to put out the most timeless 12inch possible. the exquisitely ambitious themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely is almost 12 minutes of serene ambient synth work that is like a soundtrack to a hot summer s day. heavenly chords sound just like a breathy female vocal and as they come and go, one finger piano tinkles add real emotional beauty and gentle twinkles shimmer in the distance. half way through lazy drums propel things along at a loveably lethargic pace and immediately place you on the beach. on the flip, saguaro is just as organic and beautiful, but has tumbling drums, wooden hits and soft claps as well as essa s magical synth work all bathing your soul in warm rays. b2 buran chime is perfectly horizontal and expansive, with tinkling triangles, angelic chords and scattered hits and harpsichord sounds all radiating effusively. this is timeless music that will calm busy minds now and forever.

after kicking off in some style, max d. blas and alex piccini s monologue label follows up with a second sizzling release, this time from yaya & lorenzo chiabotti. the first monologue release received great feedback from the likes of villalobos, raresh and matthew dear amongst others, and yaya and chibotti, fire out three original cuts here, that also come with a remix from robert dietz that ensures this is another massive package.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

stilove4music regulars al kent & devin dare met in nyc a few years ago for a very exclusive disco party celebrating the birthday of one of their biggest disco heroes. waltered states is the fruit of this meeting in the big apple. it just needed to come out on wax.

best works records label-owner andré lodemann is back with a new long-awaited ep on his imprint. it is the 20th release on the label. for this “birth” ep andré personally enlisted non-other than swiss duo adriatique for their remix skills aswell as new-comer producer fabian dikof. andré’s track “birth” creates contrasts using african-drumming inspired styles paired with techy-beat pro-gramming. starting more on a minimal tip the track works its self up to high-tension climaxing with an emotional break keeping the deeper moments intact. adriatique created a faster more club-orientated ver-sion paring the more hooky parts of the original with beat-sythn elements giving the track a more tribal feel. the second remix featured here come’s via fabian dikof the second main artist on best works records. it s great to have him remix andré lodemann at last presenting his masterful skills. fabian took a different path in his remix working more on the melodic hook but also creating a warm bass-laden soundscape that loves the dance-floor in its own right.

amsterdam producers and good friends kaap and scott franka have come together to start a new label and live act: working titles. kaap is best known as the label boss of tape cassette label yield, scott just debuted with his first 12” on quartet series. together they perform primarily hardware based live sessions. for their label they improvise, jam and record to press these takes only on vinyl. the idea is to capture the real, raw and authentic improvised moments as soon as possible after they happen, hence the name working titles. this first vinyl release features the wt001 and wt002 outtakes on one disc. these sessions were recorded by the pair in an abandoned cabin in the woods in the south of holland, surrounded by nature.

the sadly departed jaki liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. best known for his work in can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and emotional rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-can period living in stollwerck. on the a side of this 7inch curio is the sound of phantom band with linear johnson & the protons. rush rush has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still liebezeit s drumming stands out. the b side drums off chaos need little explanation its the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

coming out of the audio plants fraternity, ukranian drum & bass artist pageant brings a bright and breezy musicality to the scene on this expansive debut album. the beats come through clear and punchy while the instrumentation takes its lead from ltj bukem s smoother moments to results in a very palatable kind of liquid drum & bass. this is as feel good as the genre can get, and with its wide scope for natural and synthetic sound sources it never tires on the ears. whether it s the soaring vocal of elena aki on space song or the expressive guitar trills on taxi driver, there s always something catchy to draw your ear in to pageant s smooth as silk soundworld.

taking proto sites back to the hypnotic hardware methods of earlier releases like lutto lento, s olbricht and sentry, suspension ep makes things kaleidoscopic, raw, repetitive and asynchronous. high gain perishing delays gradually cook your brain while flerbing sci-fi reverberations crawl across the atmosphere. this five-track cassette mantra has a furry analogue outer crust barely containing its computer controlled acid consciousness. each tune has its own density and unique stripped back bass structure which carries the whole thing along, absorbing strange hissy elements as it rocks downstream. breaking through the mantle, sawtooth voices murmur foreign incantations, swinging loopy phrases come and go jamming their way into repetitive bass squelches all pressure cooked to the extreme.

canadian label silent season continues its mission to marry modern electronic music processes with the ancient nature of the label s base on vancouver island, this time turning to mosam howieson to deliver a four track ep of ambient techno experimentation. the melbourne-based artist has a unique approach that should appeal to lovers of heavyweight bass pressure and subtle, moody cinematics, not least on opening track i. there s a submerged acid throb to ii, but only after time spent lingering in a beatless reverie. loaded with surprises at every turn, this record has a lot of depth that should it rewarding faithful listeners for a long time to come.

gatefold double coloured vinyl lp version. this is the debut album by producer rodden von ast, the man from mecklenburg vorpommern. von ast isn t new to the business. his last two releases and his own imprint sumpfsee records putting him right into the spotlight. on the altkamp album the busy producer finds time to entertain you with eight stellar tracks on the vinyl version, which come across as well-structured little stories, drowning the dancefloor. all in all sounds that are unmistakably in the family of or are related to the enchanted moments we know from kalkbrenner but as well as techno moments. the opener „altkamp- is a restlessly inventive bricolage of unconventional sounds and textures. -bettfett- is a masterclass in crisp, high-definition techno, as christal synths, a solid kick, and an insistent bass stab form a deeply hypnotic groove. -gedeih and verderb- with mate herr maarec draws on spacious arrangements of dub techno elements, burnished with snickering percussive repetition and scything synths. „unser klonet - is a spacey burner that builds into an indisputable festival-rocker, complete with punchy claps, descending bass-line.

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

iona fortune is a composer and producer from glasgow and presents the “tao of i” album as her debut release. inspired by eastern philosophy and slated to be the first in an 8 album series exploring all the symbols of the i ching, her music is influenced by oriental sounds and features a palette of instruments that includes the guzheng, gamelan and synthi aks. the overall effect is a singular and beguiling sound that loosely fits in with the fourth world concept imagined by jon hassell, and indeed iona fortune has also contributed a track to optimo music’s new fourth world compilation “miracle steps”. the initial vinyl edition will come on a white vinyl pressing with inside sleeve and original artwork by iona fortune.

the man known as dj nature holds a long and illustrious list of releases that spans all the way back to the early 90s, when, as nature boy, the bristol born dj and producer was carving out sample heavy house music for labels like ruff disco records and the underworld affiliated tomato label. his relatively modern re-incarnation, as dj nature, has seen singles and two albums come correct on revered labels like golf channel recordings and jazzy sport. following on from futureboogies landmark 50th release, dj nature drops a heavyweight four track ep on the bristol label, each track promising and delivering summertime vibes in abundance. born lifted, with its deft guitar licks and soulful vocal chops over lazy, hazy beats, is a great example of the nature aesthetics that make his tracks so very popular across the house fraternity. my life picks up the pace, deploying granite hard snares and cosmic chords with dusted vocal samples. on the flip, what it isnt packs some jazz chops with its sampled pianos and saxophone riffs over a discordant beat that swings with the best of them, whilst ep closer loving u more again serves up some delicious summertime grooves with the perfect marriage of deep, funky bass and seductive samples.

the ultimate edition of the roots reggae masterpiece release 1977-2017! the album classic was originally issued in 1977 in jamaica only and 20 years later in 1997 released by the blood & fire label as the outstanding but now deleted heart of the congos. vp records sub-label 17 north parade has released now the definitive 2017 re-mastered 3lp deluxe edition put together with both respect and gratitude to that illustrious antecedent (also available as 3cd-set incl. the ultrarare original lp mix). this new 3lp-vinyl-set is based on the more well-known mix and master from the blood & fire re-release, plus dubs, disco mixes, seven and twelve inch versions and has with -don’t blame it on i- an overlooked previously unreleased track unearthed. the 3lp-vinyl was state-of the-art re-mastered again by kevin metcalfe and comes in a 6mm spine jacket sleeve with full colour printed illustrated inner sleeves and the liner notes by noel hawks. stickered with the quote: the best roots reggae album ever...(lloyd bradley)
